Whats is a Fold?

Literal and more imaginative interpretations of the idea of a "fold":

The initial idea of a fold.

A relation to Geology, a fold in the crust of the upper mantle.
It's interesting how a curve is classed as a fold, unlike the usual folded edge.

Fold; to mix. Baking term.

A folding bike, if a bike can fold, surely anything can yeah?

Super cool guy folding in a game of poker.

I began by looking at publications that included folds in a broader sense at first, before connecting to fit with my own design process. I have described the emotion and ideas each fold communicates and how this could relate to expressing a design process;

Split personality, perhaps a messy yet organised design process.

This folded publication is very organised and clean, perhaps a linear, clinical design process.
This is not relative to my design process.

A folded typeface. Creating an interesting use of tone due to the folds, 
the message here could be the designer is adjustable and willing to 
adapt as each glyph has the same origin, a square.

Erratic/ Broken/ Disturbed.

The aesthetic and connotations of such folds appeals to me, the communication of
randomness, organised yet disturbed feel.

Folding from and into a envelope creates a smart and professional feel,
this would not be appropriate for my process.

The use of an isometric fold communicates a random yet clinical approach.
The infinite and unique folds that can be created here could be used to communicate a concept.

Creating something a lot more interesting with a simple fold.

Folds in Geology.

Fold in nature, 100's of folds placed together to create one object. 

Fold in nature; scales of a fish.

Fold in nature; the underside of a mushroom.

My experiments with folding:

To start with I began with a simple stock as the defining of the fold is more important as of yet.

I am going to annotate each image with the idea and emotion it communicates in relation to a design process.

Could communicate two messages together.
Split personality.

Simple.
Elegant.
Dynamic.

Complicated.
Smart.

Each side may represent a certain aspect.

Could the angles represent a certain aspect?

Curve could communicate the process like a graph.

Now I have experimented with folds, I am to consider how I can connect my Design Process with both the fold and choice of material.
