OUGD504 - Studio Brief 01 - My Design Process - Development

From the folds I experimented with, I believe the isometric grid has the strongest conceptual agreement with my design process.

Isometric Fold.
Distortion.
Busy.
The use of a isometric fold creates endless folds/shapes and a distorted, crumpled aesthetic.

The aesthetic and connotations of such folds appeals to me the most, as the connotations of
randomness and organised yet a disturbed feel.

Looking at the isometric fold, I can associate the description of my design process: Messy, creative, scattered and abstract.

Describing my Design Process.
I think that simply calling this project "my design process" would be contradictory, my design process is not that simple, well labelled or linear.

Using a phrase or word to describe the method in which I develop through a brief:

Diamond out of the rough.
Clarity out of Distortion.
Jumbled.
Eventually.
Finding Clarity.
Distorted.
Twisted.
Collage.

Finding Clarity.

I thought this best described my design process, finding clarity in the midst of a jumbled arrangement of existing aspirations, ideas and morals towards design.

This is how I develop through a brief, imagine a huge collage of all the work I have seen (Inspirations) , the work I want to do (Aspirations & Morals) and the limitations of a brief I have to work within (Limitations, Target Audience, Schedule, Budget, Commercial consideration, Research, Materials).

Now imagine finding connections between these aspects in a erratic manner until an selection of initial ideas are created ( Notes, Brainstorms, Thumbnails).

I would then present ( Presentation) these initial ideas in a critique to gather secondary opinions and feedback (Feedback and Adjust).

Developing and producing artwork from the adjustments and criticisms (Development) I then gather secondary opinions and feedback for a second, or several occasion. (Feedback and Adjust) until I have a (Final).

OUGD504 - Studio Brief 01 - My Design Process - Study Task 02 - Folding Styles

Whats is a Fold?

Literal and more imaginative interpretations of the idea of a "fold":

The initial idea of a fold.

A relation to Geology, a fold in the crust of the upper mantle.
It's interesting how a curve is classed as a fold, unlike the usual folded edge.

Fold; to mix. Baking term.
A folding bike, if a bike can fold, surely anything can yeah?

Super cool guy folding in a game of poker.

I began by looking at publications that included folds in a broader sense at first, before connecting to fit with my own design process. I have described the emotion and ideas each fold communicates and how this could relate to expressing a design process;

Split personality, perhaps a messy yet organised design process.

This folded publication is very organised and clean, perhaps a linear, clinical design process.
This is not relative to my design process.

A folded typeface. Creating an interesting use of tone due to the folds,
the message here could be the designer is adjustable and willing to
adapt as each glyph has the same origin, a square.
.

Erratic/ Broken/ Disturbed.

The aesthetic and connotations of such folds appeals to me, the communication of
randomness, organised yet disturbed feel.

Folding from and into a envelope creates a smart and professional feel,
this would not be appropriate for my process.

The use of an isometric fold communicates a random yet clinical approach.
The infinite and unique folds that can be created here could be used to communicate a concept.

Creating something a lot more interesting with a simple fold.
Ingenius.
Other types of folds:

Folds in nature; Leaf.

Folds in Geology.

Fold in nature, 100's of folds placed together to create one object.

Fold in nature; scales of a fish.

Fold in nature; the underside of a mushroom.

'Folding arms'

My experiments with folding:

To start with I began with a simple stock as the defining of the fold is more important as of yet.

I am going to annotate each image with the idea and emotion it communicates in relation to a design process.

Could communicate two messages together.
Split personality.

Simple.
Elegant.
Dynamic.

Complicated.
Smart.

Show/Theatre.
'Shining Idea'

Love heart.
'From the Heart'

Simple.
Sharp.

3D.
'Out of the box'

Sharp.
Complicated.
Each side may represent a certain aspect.

Lively.
Spring.
Propelled.

Theatre. Layered.

Focus.

Mountain/Peak.
Looking up.

Complicated.
Suspense.

Unwinding.

3D.
Mountain.
Overcoming a wall.

Envelope.
Smart/Organised.

Hidden.
Unfolded.

Geometric.
Simple yet busy.

Modern.
Could the angles represent a certain aspect?

Isometric Fold.
Distortion.
Busy.

Folder.
Organised.

A 'List' to unfold.

Oriental?
Dynamic.

Smart.
Suspense.

Modern.
Trend.
Abstract.

On a level.
Growing.

Dynamic.
Arrow.
Direction.

Curve could communicate the process like a graph.

Now I have experimented with folds, I am to consider how I can connect my Design Process with both the fold and choice of material.
